Sen. Katrina Jackson introduces felony justice reform laws

MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Point out Senator Katrina Jackson is concentrating on legal justice reform this legislative session.

Jackson, who signifies components of Ouachita and Morehouse Parishes, has authored costs dealing with repealing the demise penalty, civil forfeiture law, and sentences for people in possession of modest amounts of marijuana.

One bill is in response to a 2021 invoice that would make possession of up to 14 grams of cannabis punishable by a $100 fine.

“My invoice would allow for you to file a reconsideration of sentencing if the possession of marijuana or possession with intent to distribute cannabis was a selecting variable in how significantly time you acquire,” Senator Jackson told KNOE.

Jackson thinks men and women really should no for a longer time be jailed for a crime now punishable by a quotation.

“I really don’t have the stats on no matter whether anybody is left incarcerated that only had a possession of marijuana charge, but if they are, it would use then indeed,” stated Jackson.

A further precedence for Jackson is reforming Louisiana’s civil forfeiture legislation. At present, a particular person has one thirty day period to attraction if regulation enforcement seizes property they sense is being employed whilst committing a criminal offense.

“Thirty times to respond to the forfeiture of your property, but that 30 days in fact commences when the DA normally takes it to the publish office, in its place of the working day you receive it,” reported Jackson.

In Louisiana, law enforcement can seize cash, vehicles, and any other home even if that individual is under no circumstances convicted of a criminal offense. Jackson supports a different invoice that would improve that.

“That says you have to be convicted of a criminal offense before civil forfeiture can choose position,” described Jackson. “My invoice does not alter that, but I am supporting that monthly bill as perfectly.”

Jackson has also introduced a monthly bill to eliminate the loss of life penalty in Louisiana.
