Here is why disbarment in Wisconsin is only temporary … and why that might transform

In some states, dropping a regulation license — or receiving “disbarred” — is forever.

In Wisconsin, a disbarred lawyer can petition to have a revoked license reinstated just after 5 a long time. And many do, even those who’ve been convicted of felonies.

At least 3 Supreme Court justices help eliminating that possibility in the most egregious cases.

“I believe that when it arrives to lawyer self-control, courts should say what they necessarily mean and necessarily mean what they say,” wrote Chief Justice Annette Ziegler. “We really should not be creating wrong perceptions to both the general public and to the lawyer seeking to practice law once again.

“I feel there may perhaps be unusual and unusual cases that would warrant the long term revocation of an attorney’s license to apply law.”

Ziegler’s remarks arrived in a shorter concurring opinion to the Supreme Court’s most recent purchase of revocation, concerning Laura A. Schwefel of Sussex. Justices Brian Hagedorn and Rebecca Bradley joined Ziegler’s impression.
